Scout Books teamed up with our pals from the creative studio Jolby & Friends to create a limited edition notebook that we’re calling DRAW MORE, PLANT MORE! Whether you’re headed to the mountain for a hike among the firs, or taking a stroll along an oak lined street, this notebook is handy tool for jotting down thoughts and sketching branches. Best of all, we’re planting a tree for each notebook made with the National Forest Foundation. Support the cause and pick up your own notebook here!
With deep roots in the Pacific Northwest and a love for all things evergreen, Jolby & Friends made for the perfect collaborator for this project. Their studio’s work is filled with radical patterns, free wheeling lettering, and awesome illustrations. Jolby & Friends’ projects covers a whole lot of territory— they’ve designed artwork for skateboards, games, restaurants, posters, conferences, and also happen to host some amazing doodle parties to help spread the good vibes and epic drawing love.
The crew at Jolby & Friends was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about the collaboration:
What is the design process like at Jolby & Friends?
The “Draw More, Plant More” concept really drove this piece for us! Knowing that each scout book in someone’s hand meant there was a tree being planted, we wanted people to think about nature, the forest, and the environment each time they opened it up. The creative process started with a sketch (as most things do here). When we sketch, we open our brains up and let any idea come out. Then, we build off of those ideas and continue to push each other until we get to something that excites us and that we can see working for the project. We went in the direction of creating an abstract landscape of shapes that could be found in the wilderness: water, seeds, plants, trees, rocks, etc. We wanted to break nature and plant growth down to its essentials, which inspired the use of simple shapes to tell a story. We created all the shapes in Illustrator, and brought them into Photoshop for texture. In the end we’re pretty stoked to have made something that looks very abstract, but when you start reading into it you can see the story.
Where do your designers draw their inspiration?
A lot of us are from very different walks of life. So, the inspiration comes from all over: Some of us are inspired by the world around us, whether it’s getting outside in Oregon or through traveling. Others get inspired from gaming or sports, but the majority of it comes from our collective brains mashing into each other all day.
What are your fave hikes and tree-filled spaces around Oregon?
In no particular order: Mt. Tabor, Forest Park, Timothy Lake, Angel’s Rest, and Trillium Lake.
We’re also kicking off DRAW MORE, PLANT MORE! with an awesome drawing party! Join us for the Treeline Doodle at the Stay Wild Adventure EXPO on August 28th for an afternoon of sketching in the heart of the World Forestry Center. RSVP to our Eventbrite page, check out all the details, and come draw with us!
