What exactly is a Scout Book?

The Scout Book is a powerful publishing platform that allows you to make customized notebooks and books. We provide online ordering, design templates, and friendly customer support to make the process easy and fun. Free domestic shipping for orders up to 3,500 books helps get your project to your door with ease.

We offer Scout Books in two sizes: a 3.5 x 5 in. Pocket Scout Book and a 5 x 7 in. Mega Scout Book, both of which come standard with 32 pages and new options for higher page counts.

What are Scout Books made out of?

All Scout Books are made with care in the heart of Portland, Oregon. Each order is printed using a top-of-the-line HP Indigo Digital Offset press on 100% recycled papers sourced from North American mills.

Scout Book covers are made with 18pt Chipboard that contains 100% recycled content. Scout Book pages are made with 70# text weight paper containing 100% post-consumer recycled content. We power all of our presses and production machinery with renewable energy.

What is the Mark of Quality?

We’re proud of what we do, and we want you to know you’re holding a 100% authentic Scout Book in your hand. That’s why we apply this tiny imprint to each book that comes from our shop. The Scout Books Mark of Quality is printed on the very last page of each and every Scout Book. It’s small, but it’s powerful. Just like a Scout Book.

If you’re ordering a Scout Book with custom pages, be sure to leave room for the Mark of Quality on the last page of your book. We recommend downloading our design templates, as the pages template shows the proper location of the Mark of Quality.



What’s the difference between standard pages and a custom page design?

Notebooks with standard pages come with your choice of blank, lined, or dot grid pages printed in black ink.

Custom pages are offered in two options: black ink or CMYK. You can design the content for just 1 or all 32 pages! And we’re happy to drop in our standard pages in place of any blank pages–just include a note with your order.


Can I use custom ink colors?

Absolutely! You can design in almost any color you’d like, and we’ll reproduce your artwork using a CMYK system of printing. You can set up your files in CMYK or as Uncoated Pantone colors. When using Uncoated Pantone colors, we will convert them to the closest CMYK match possible. You can expect the color to darken slightly due to the transparent nature of the ink printing on Kraft chipboard.

Please avoid setting up files using RGB or HEX as these are meant for screens.

Can my Scout Book have more or less than 32 pages?

All Scout Books come standard with 32 pages. With recent equipment upgrades, we are now able to offer higher or lower page counts! All page counts must be in increments of 4. In our Pocket size, we can produce books with up to 40 pages. And in our Mega size, we can offer up to 48 pages. For additional page pricing, please email us at

Can I print in color on the pages?

Absolutely! We now offer full-color printing in CMYK for the pages (as well as the covers). You can use just one color or as many colors as you’d like for the same cost.

Can I print on the inside cover?

Yes, you can! Our covers are printed flat, so printing on the inside cover requires an additional run through the press. When checking out, be sure to choose your color options for each side of the cover. For example, if you’d like to print in black ink on both the outside and inside covers, you will choose black ink twice (once for each side).

Can you add foil to my Scout Books?

We are not offering foil as an option at this time.

Can I change the color of the staples?

You sure can! Every Scout Book comes with our standard silver staples. If you’re looking for something a little different, you can now choose to upgrade your staple color to either metallic gold or copper for a $25 flat fee.

Can I place an order for a higher volume than what is offered on your site?

Yes, we’d love that! We ask that you please contact us directly at to discuss pricing and turnaround for high volume orders.

Can I get my books with square corners?

Yes! Reach out to us at for a custom quote.

Do you have Metallic Ink options?

Yes. If you’d like your artwork to have a metallic effect, we have metallic Silver ink as an option!


How do I order my own Scout Books?

Will I get a proof of my design?

Yes! We provide free digital proofs of your artwork imposed on our Kraft covers for your review and approval. Proofs may take up to 1 business day to receive. Once we receive your final approval, production begins! If you decide to make edits and submit a new file, we’re happy to provide additional digital proofs for free. Just be aware, this can impact the overall timeline.

If you have an in-hand date you’re aiming for, please include a note with your order or let one of our Account Managers know. If you’re interested to see your artwork in print before going into production please see our FAQ about Print Proofs below.

How long does this process take?

After you’ve completed your order, you’ll receive an order confirmation email that includes a link to upload your artwork, or you can email it to use at We’ll create a digital proof within 1 business day, which you’ll need to review and approve before production begins. Any delays in proofing will delay the order, so if you have an in-hand date, let us know so we can make sure you get your books when you need them!

Our standard production timeline for both Pocket and Mega Scout Books up to 3,500 books is typically 15 business days after proofs are approved. (Please note that this timeline does not include shipping or holidays.) For orders over 3,500 books, please contact one of our Account Managers at hello@scoutbooks for a timeline and pricing. Complex orders that involve any assembly or special packaging may require an extended production timeline.

Depending on the volume in our shop at the time you place your order, production time may vary up to +/- 5 business days. We will be sure to confirm your ship date at the time of proof approval.

Can you send me a sample?

Absolutely! Just fill out the order samples form or email us your address at, and we’ll get those in the mail within 1 to 2 business days. If you’re international, the samples are free, but we do ask that you cover the cost of shipping. You can still fill out the form or email us, and one of our Account Managers will reach out with the price for your location.

We’d love to! Drop us a line with your shipping address, and if there’s something specific you’d like to see a sample of. We ask that you cover the fees if we are shipping internationally.

Can the Scout Books team design my project?

We do not offer design services, but we support and empower you to design your own using templates we’ve created just for you! If you need basic logo or design element placement, we’re happy to help. Just upload or email us high-resolution (preferably PDF or EPS) files, let us know where you’d like them placed or send us a mockup, and we’ll drop them in the template for you.

What types of files do you accept?

Our preferred file format for final artwork is a PDF output from our Design Templates with the fonts outlined and the guides and bleeds included. We also accept EPS, PNG and JPEG files that are at least 300 dpi/ppi resolution. You are welcome to send us your final artwork as live Adobe files from Illustrator, InDesign, or Photoshop.

Please be sure the fonts are outlined and any necessary elements are embedded (or links included) for reference, but we prefer not to use your live files for proofing and printing.

Can I get a Printed Sample of My Books?

Yes, we now offer Print Proofs for your cover and pages! The cost is $50 for just the cover or $100 for the cover and pages–this includes 3-day shipping. They come as flat press sheets rolled and shipped in a tube. We do not offer fully assembled Print Proofs, but we’re happy to send a sample kit for reference.

Print Proofs are created after an order has been placed and digital proofs have been approved. Print Proofs typically ship within 2 to 3 business days. Please be aware the production timeline begins once the Print Proofs have been approved.

Can I make changes after proof approval?

Depending on your books’ stage in production, design changes may or may not be possible after proof approvals. Please note that production is paused when changes are made, so project timelines may be affected. Reach out to us at to see if changes are possible.

How do I send you my Artwork?

Once you place an order through our website, you will receive a confirmation email that includes a link to upload your artwork files. We can also receive them as an email attachment or link at Either way works for us!

How can I place a re-order?

To place a reorder through our website, check out with the same specs as your previous project. Then, in the “customer notes” section, let us know it’s a reorder and if you have the previous order number please include it.

If it is an exact reprint we will use the same artwork we have on file. If you have a reorder with updated artwork follow the same steps above and upload your updated artwork or email us an attachment or a link.

We can also place your reorder for you. Just reach out to us at and one of our Account Managers will get you all set up.

How do I set up files using White ink?

To set up files with white ink as part of the design, please use our white ink swatch included in our design templates and set it up as it’s own layer or channel.

If you’re using another program besides Adobe (like Canva for example) you can assign a color in place of white and let us know in the notes section at checkout that you would like us to print that certain color as white. Some folks use an “offwhite” and some use “magenta”, but any color will do.


What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards via Paypal.

We also accept ACH transfers and payments by check. Please note these payment methods could impact your ship date.

Net 30 terms are also available to those who qualify. Just reach out us at for a credit application, which may take up to 3 business days to process.

Do you offer free shipping?

For custom orders, we offer free standard domestic shipping within the contiguous US for up to 3,500 books.

Free standard shipping to the lower 48 United States is also available for Shop and DIY orders over $100.

Does Scout Books offer other shipping options? What about international shipping?

We do! When you’re ready to check out, you’ll find a variety of shipping speeds to choose from.

We use national carriers for custom orders but can also ship using USPS or a carrier of your choice. We can also arrange for a courier for local folks at no extra charge.

Do you or your company have a UPS or FedEx account you’d like us to bill? We’re happy to! Just email us at or include your account number in the notes with your order. For international orders, we use the best method for the destination.

Once my order has shipped, how long will it take to arrive?

For domestic orders: Depending on where you live, standard Ground usually takes anywhere from 1 to 7 business days to arrive at your doorstep. If you need faster shipping, you can choose an expedited option at checkout or email us at for more options and pricing.

For international orders: Shipping time can vary greatly depending on where you live and the customs policies of your country. Shoot us an email at to get an estimate!

Can I return my Custom Scout Books?

Custom orders are specially manufactured to your specifications and are non-returnable. If we make an error in producing your order, we will gladly fix it. Please let us know if you have any questions.

What is your refund policy?

Full cash refunds or store credit are available for 30 days after the placement of an order, assuming no artwork has been submitted and no work has been completed. After 30 days, refunds will be available in the form of store credit.

Partial refunds may be available for orders in various stages of production. A $100 fee will be taken out of the refund if the order is cancelled after proofing but before beginning production. 50% of the order will be refunded if some printing has occurred but it has not passed into the next stage of production. Once the books are completed, no refunds will be available.

When will my retail order ship?

Retail orders typically ship within 1 to 3 business days. If you need them by a specific date please include a note with your in-hand date. Once your order officially ships, you will receive an email notification with tracking information.
