WHAT ARE SCOUT BOOKS?

What exactly is a Scout Book?

The Scout Book is a powerful publishing platform that empowers you to create customized books and notebooks. We make the process simple with easy online ordering, design templates, and a friendly support team ready to assist.

Choose from two versatile sizes: the 3.5″ x 5″ Pocket Scout Book and the 5″ x 7″ Mega Scout Book, both featuring 32 pages. Customize your book to suit your needs, as much or as little as you like!

What are Scout Books made out of?

Scout Books are crafted with care in Portland, Oregon, using digital offset printing and 100% recycled North American papers.

Our covers feature 18pt Chipboard with 85% post-consumer and 15% pre-consumer recycled content, while the pages are made of 70# text weight paper with 100% post-consumer recycled content. All of our production is powered by renewable energy!

What is the Mark of Quality?

We proudly apply the Scout Books Mark of Quality to the last page of every book to ensure authenticity. It’s small, but powerful. Just like a Scout Book!

If you’re designing custom pages, please leave space for this mark. We recommend downloading our design templates to show the correct placement.

What Page Options do you offer?

All Scout Books are made to order and come with blank recycled white pages, with options to customize. You can choose to add our classic lined or dot grid design printed in black ink, or go a step further and fully customize your own book, printed in either black ink or in full-color using CMYK.

Can I customize the entire book?

Yes! You can design the inside and outside cover as well as the pages.

Can I order Scout Books with more or less than 32 pages?

WHAT ARE MY CUSTOM OPTIONS?

Can I use custom ink colors?

Absolutely! You can set up your files in CMYK or Uncoated Pantone colors (which we’ll reproduce in CMYK). Since the covers are Kraft chipboard and the inks have some transparency, please consider this when choosing your colors. We’ll provide a digital proof on our Kraft covers for you to preview the final look.

Avoid using RGB or HEX, as these are for screens. If you have any questions or concerns about color, feel free to reach out to hello@scoutbooks.com for assistance.

Can my Scout Book have more or less than 32 pages?

All Scout Books come standard with 32 pages plus the cover. We can offer higher or lower page counts in increments of 4. Our Pocket size can have up to 40 pages, while our Mega size can go up to 48 pages. For pricing on custom page counts, please email hello@scoutbooks.com.

Can I print in color on the pages?

Absolutely! We now offer full-color printing in CMYK for the pages (as well as the covers). You can use just one color or as many colors as you’d like for the same cost.

Can I print on the inside cover?

Yes! You can print on the inside cover, but since our covers are printed flat, it requires an additional run through the press. When checking out, be sure to select your color options for each side of the cover. For example, if you want to print in black ink on both the outside and inside covers, choose black ink for each side.

Can you add foil to my Scout Books?

We are not offering foil as an option at this time.

Can I change the color of the staples?

You sure can! Every Scout Book comes with our standard silver staples, or you can choose to upgrade to a bright metallic gold for a $25 flat fee.

Can I place an order for a higher volume than what is offered on your site?

Yes, we’d love that! We ask that you please contact us directly at hello@scoutbooks.com to discuss pricing and turnaround for high volume orders.

Can I get my books with square corners?

Certainly! If you prefer sharp corners or want to save a bit on cost, you can request square corners instead of the standard rounded ones. Please email hello@scoutbooks.com with your request, and one of our Account Managers will assist you!

Can I change the color of the cover?

All our covers are made with Kraft chipboard, but feel free to design your book with a full flood of color! Just set up your artwork using either our Standard ink colors or CMYK. Keep in mind that colors may be impacted due to the transparency of the ink.

How do I order my own Scout Books?

What types of files do you accept?

Our preferred file format for final artwork is a PDF created using our Design Templates, with fonts outlined and guides and bleeds included.

We also accept EPS, PNG, and JPEG files at a minimum of 300 dpi/ppi. Additionally, we accept Illustrator, InDesign, or Photoshop files with all links, fonts, and embedded images. If using Photoshop, please keep colors on separate channels.

How do I send you my artwork?

After placing your order, you can upload artwork on the website, use the link in your confirmation email, or send files to hello@scoutbooks.com.

Will I get a proof of my design?

Yes! We provide free digital proofs of your artwork on our Kraft covers for your review. Expect them within one business day, and we’ll start production after your approval!

If you’d like to see your artwork in print before production, please refer to our FAQ about printed samples below.

Can I get a printed sample of my books?

We’re excited to offer Print Proofs so you can see your artwork on our paper before production! These flat press sheets are rolled and shipped in a tube, adding 3-7 business days to your project.

Cover proofs are $50, or cover and pages for $100. Simply place your order and request Print Proofs (for cover only and/or pages) in the NOTES section at checkout. An Account Manager will send an invoice and timeline. Once digital proofs are approved, we’ll get started on your Print Proofs!

Can I make changes after proof approval?

Depending on your books’ stage in production, design changes may or may not be possible after proof approvals. Please note that production is paused when changes are made, so project timelines may be affected. Reach out to us at hello@scoutbooks.com to see if changes are possible.

Can the Scout Books team design my project?

While we don’t offer design services, we support and empower you to design your own! You can use our Adobe or Canva design templates to help you create your own design with ease!

For basic logo or design element placement, we’re happy to assist. Simply upload or email us high-resolution files (PDF or EPS preferred) at hello@scoutbooks.com, tell us where you’d like them placed, or send a mockup, and we’ll drop them into the template for you.

How long does this process take?

After placing your order, you can upload artwork on the website, use the link in your confirmation email, or send files to hello@scoutbooks.com. We’ll send a digital proof within one business day for approval. Production for up to 3,500 books typically takes 12-15 business days after proof approval, plus shipping.

Check our website for updates on production times. Rush production and expedited shipping are available. Let us know if you have a specific in-hand date to avoid delays. Email us at hello@scoutbooks.com for a custom timeline and pricing.

Can you send me a sample?

Absolutely! You can order our Sample Kit here, and we’ll send it out within 1-3 business days. Please note, we charge a small shipping fee for domestic and international addresses, but the samples are FREE!

How can I place a re-order?

The simplest way to place a reorder is to include your previous order number and a note stating it’s a reorder in the NOTES section at checkout.

If you don’t have your previous order number or if you have any questions, just email us at hello@scoutbooks.com, and one of our Account Managers will be happy to assist!

How do I ensure my order arrives in time for my event?

The best way to ensure to get your books in time for your event is to email us at hello@scoutbooks.com for a specific timeline. Our Account Managers are happy to help! Just let us know what date the books need to arrive on or before, the location, what size book and quantity.

How do I set up files using White ink?

To set up files with white ink as part of the design, please use our white ink swatch included in our design templates and set it up as it’s own layer or channel.

If you’re using another program besides Adobe (like Canva for example) you can assign a color in place of white and let us know in the notes section at checkout that you would like us to print that certain color as white. Some folks use an “offwhite” and some use “magenta”, but any color will do.

SHIPPING, PAYMENT, AND POLICIES

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards through PayPal, as well as ACH transfers and checks. Net 30 terms are available for qualified customers. To apply, contact us at hello@scoutbooks.com; the application process may take up to 3 business days.

Please note that a delay in payment may impact the overall timeline of your order.

Do you offer free shipping?

We do! For custom orders, we offer free standard domestic shipping within the contiguous US for up to 3,500 books. Free shipping is also available for Shop and DIY orders over $100.

Need your order in a hurry? You can upgrade to expedited shipping at checkout.

Does Scout Books offer other shipping options? What about international shipping?

We’ve got options! At checkout, you can choose from a range of speeds. Local orders can also be picked up or delivered by courier.

Want us to bill your UPS or FedEx account? No problem! Email us at hello@scoutbooks.com or include your account number in your order notes.

For international orders, we’ll pick the best method for your destination. Feel free to ask about any other options!

Once my order has shipped, how long will it take to arrive?

For domestic orders, depending on where you live, Standard Ground usually takes from 1 to 7 business days. We also offer expedited options at checkout.

For international orders, shipping times can vary greatly depending on where you live and the customs policies of your country. If you’d like more information on international or expedited shipping options, feel free to email us at hello@scoutbooks.com

When will my retail order ship?

Retail orders typically ship within 1 to 3 business days. If you need them by a specific date please include a note with your in-hand date. Once your order officially ships, you will receive an email notification with tracking information.

Can I return my Custom Scout Books?

Custom orders are specially manufactured to your specifications and are non-returnable. If we make an error in producing your order, we will gladly fix it. Please reach out you have any questions!

What is your refund policy?

Full cash refunds or store credit are available within 30 days of ordering if no artwork has been submitted and no work has started.

After 30 days, store credit is offered.

Partial refunds may apply for orders in progress. If your order is canceled after proofing but before production, a $100 fee will be deducted from the refund.

If printing has started but isn’t completed, 50% of the order is refundable. No refunds are available once the books are finished.

How long is my quote valid for?

Custom price quotes are valid for 60 days.

Do you offer special pricing?

While we don’t offer wholesale discounts on Custom Orders, feel free to email us at hello@scoutbooks.com to check for any current promotions. We work with many resellers, non-profits, educational institutions, and small businesses, and we strive to keep our pricing fair and accessible for everyone!
