These sharp notebooks provide more than a place to jot down notes. Emblazoned with one of Planned Parenthood’s feisty mottos, they’re sold at fundraising events to raise money for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon. PPAO is an independent, non-partisan organization that acts as the political voice for Planned Parenthood’s two affiliates in Oregon and for women’s health care. Their work included public education campaigns, grassroots organizing, and advocacy in the legislature.
Visible is a Portland-based nonprofit that helps connect designers with causes, organizations, and underserved communities that need creative services. Their mission is to provide creative work free of charge to organizations fighting for social, environmental, and civil rights causes.
We connected PPAO with Visible to help find a designer for their custom Scout Books. Visible put a call out to their community, sharing Scout Books specs, our design templates, and PPAO’s brand guidelines and intended messaging. After receiving entries, the team at PPAO chose a hand lettered concept from Factory North, based here in Portland. They were especially excited for the chance to work on a design for print because it’s “tangible, feels more permanent and fits our style best,” says partner Nicole Sakai. The fact that the project supports PPAO was also an important factor in entering a submission. Says Nicole:
Planned Parenthood not only provides comprehensive healthcare for so many people, but a safe supportive place to access that care easily. Personally, Planned Parenthood has been there for me when I've moved to a new city and hadn't found a new doctor and when I didn't make enough money to afford traditional care and when I was in between insurance coverage AND when I just couldn't wait and needed immediate care. I can't thank them enough for being there for me and for everybody, really. Overall as a studio and a small business, more than ever we want to do our part to help the greater voice be louder in support of these basic human rights. #standwithPP
