For the past several years, TypeCon has used the Scout Books format to produce a clever guide for their conference attendees. Organized by the Society of Typographic Aficionados, this conference is a celebration of type and typography education, and is located in a different city each year. They work with designers from that city to create a guide that provides conference-goers with suggestions for where to eat, grab coffee, stop for happy hour, and fill their free time outside the conference.

TypeCon recruited Seattle-based Civilization to design the 2016 guides. This multi-disciplinary design studio works in graphic, digital and conceptual design for a range of public, private, non-profit, and international clients. The team believes in design as a means for social change, and are active within the creative community of Seattle through events and their own podcast, Beyond This Point. They also host Design Lectures, a series of free lectures at the Seattle Public Library that brings creatives from around the globe to Seattle. Since they’re accustomed to touring visiting creatives around their fair city, Civilization was a great fit for the 2016 TypeCon guides. For Four by Four, Civilization examined the four neighborhoods that surround the conference itself, and provided tips for each ‘hood, including fun anecdotes “Paula Scher’s personal favorite” as a note about a shopping destination. Their smart design featured navy ink, custom pages

Many thanks and high fives to SOTA and Civilization!
